Change the thread for the medium-long stitch

Here are the precautions for changing the thread when crocheting medium – long stitches:

  • Choose the Right Time: Change the thread at the end of a row or at a specific point where it makes the most sense in the pattern, preferably before starting a new stitch to ensure a neat transition.
  • Leave Adequate Tails: When changing the thread, leave a long enough tail of the old thread and the new thread. This allows for easy weaving in and securing of the ends later. A tail of about 6 – 8 inches is usually sufficient.
  • Secure the Old Thread: Before cutting the old thread, make sure it is securely fastened. You can do this by making a few extra loops or using a slip knot to prevent it from unraveling.
  • Insert the New Thread Correctly: Insert the hook into the stitch as you would normally, then wrap the new thread around the hook and pull it through. Make sure the new thread is positioned correctly and is not twisted.
  • Check Tension: Pay attention to the tension of the new thread. It should be consistent with the rest of the work. If the tension is too loose or too tight, it can affect the appearance and structure of the crochet piece.
  • Weave in the Ends Neatly: After changing the thread, weave in the tails of both the old and new threads neatly on the wrong side of the work. Use a yarn needle to pass the tails through the stitches to secure them and hide them from view.
