Chain Stitch

Chain stitch is a fundamental crochet stitch, often the starting point for many crochet projects. Here’s how to create it:

Initial setup: Begin with a slip knot on your crochet hook. This slip knot serves as the foundation for the chain stitch.

Forming the chain:

  • Insert the hook into the slip knot or the previous chain stitch.
  • Wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front.
  • Pull the wrapped yarn through the loop on the hook. This creates a new loop, which is the first chain stitch.
  • Repeat this process: yarn over, pull through the loop on the hook, for as many chain stitches as your pattern requires. Each time you complete this action, you add another chain stitch to your chain.

Chain stitches are incredibly versatile. They can be used to create the base for various crochet items like scarves, afghans, and even intricate lace patterns. They also form the starting row for many crochet motifs, providing a framework upon which other stitches are built. Whether you’re a beginner just starting out in the world of crochet or an experienced crocheter, the chain stitch remains an essential and frequently – used stitch in your crochet toolkit.
